Open In Position is a FREE lightweight Autodesk Inventor add-in that opens a selected component in the same orientation as it appears inside the parent assembly. No more rotating models manually after opening parts from large assemblies.
Overview
Using Inventor’s standard Open command opens the component in its default model orientation, forcing the user to manually rotate and reposition the view to match the assembly context. Open In Position eliminates that extra step - simply right-click a component in the assembly and choose Open in Position. The selected component opens in the same orientation as seen in the assembly.

Installation
- Exit Inventor
- Download installation file
- Run installation file
- Run Inventor
- “Add-in Manager Security Alert” window will appear on first run. Click the “Launch Add-in manager” button
- The Add-in Manager will open. In the list of add-ins, select OpenInPosition
- In the “Load behaviour” section, remove the checkmark from “Block” and check “Loaded/Unloaded” and “Load Automatically.
- Click OK
- Open an assembly, right click a component and select Open In Position command
- Optionally add the command to the Marking Menu for quicker access
